Powerlifting

Introduction

Men and women can be found in over 78 countries around the world competing in the sport of powerlifting. Due to the nature of the lifts involved it is reknown in sporting circles as the ultimate in strength sport.

In powerlifting competitions, athletes are categorized by sex, age and bodyweight. Each competitor is allowed three attempts at each lift, the best lift in each discipline being added to their total. The lifter with the highest total is the winner

The lifts in order are: Squat, Bench Press and Deadlift.

Not a common sight in Australia - a "two person deadlift" (318kgs) - Justin Cecil and Michelle Brubaker both 20yo and 67kg of Ball State University in Muncie USA (1998 Powerlifting USA Magazine)

Training

It has been found that the best way to train for competitive powerlifting is on a cycle training schedule. Typically lifters follow an 8 to 10 week cycle depending on their goals. Why do you want to become a powerlifter?

Powerlifting benefits many speed-strength related sports such as sprinting, rugby league, basketball. Strength training is an exercise that uses resistance (or weights) to strengthen the musculoskeletal system and improve muscle tone and endurance.

This type of training will increase muscle size and strength, and increases in tendon, bone and ligament strength. Click here for information about training clinics
